Kasvualueita Kiinassa - Shenzhen

• In 1979, late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping designated Shenzhen as one of the county's first special economic zones (SEZs), offering privileged terms to foreign companies wanting to invest there.
• The government is promising tax breaks and land concessions to tech firms, and has said it expects to invest $1.25 billion over the next five years to support high-tech start-ups and research projects.
• Chinese employers "cannot forever have cheap labor," says Hong Liang, chief China economist at Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. "They cannot just count on low-cost manufacturing." Soon the entire Chinese economy may be faced with the painful transition Shenzhen must confront today.

Kaupunki haluaa pois pelkästä valmistuksesta, teknologian kehittäjäksi. Tähän laitetaan rahaa 250 miljoonaa dollaria vuodessa vuoteen 2010 asti. Vertailun vuoksi, Suomen akatemia tukee tutkimusta noin 330 miljoonan dollarin edestä vuonna 2006. Dollarin ostovoima Shenzhenissä on toki enemmän kuin Suomessa.

Shenzhenin BKT per henki on noin 7500 US dollaria. Se on vähän alle maailman keskiarvon, suunnilleen Thaimaan, Brasilian ja Bulgarian tasolla. Suomen BKT per henki oli yli 27000 US dollaria vuonna 2003.
